Crabgrass Puppet Theatre

awarded grants from Jim Henson Foundation and Puppeteers of America!

We are delighted and honored to have been chosen to receive financial support from the Jim Henson Foundation and the Puppeteers of America Endowment Fund to help fund the creation of our newest production,

Opening in October 2010!

goblins & boyWe're excited to explore the union of two art forms we love dearly: puppetry and poetry. Haiku, HipHop and Hotdogs will use puppetry to explore different poetry traditions and will introduce school-age children and their families to some of our favorite poems. The show will use rod, hand, tabletop and shadow puppets, as well as human actors. Imagine a symphony composed entirely by goldfish! Thrill to the adventures of “Fearless Flying Hotdogs!” Dance with the “Funky Snowman!” This exciting new fusion of poetry and puppetry includes Jack Prelutsky's "The Goblin" (these goblins just want to have fun!) as well as poems by Nikki Giovanni, David McCord, Calef Brown and others. Remember to “Keep a Poem in Your Pocket,” and – above all – “Do Not Approach an Emu!”

Crabgrass Welcomes Fergus Walsh!

We are very excited to announce that Fergus Walsh will be joining Crabgrass Puppet Theatre. Fergus is an actor and puppeteer who comes from Dublin, Ireland, who is currently completing his Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Connecticut. This summer he'll be working closely with us on the development of Haiku, HipHop and Hotdogs, and he'll start performing with us in the late summer or early fall. We are really looking forward to collaborating with this multi-talented artist. For more info about Fergus, visit his web site: www.thepuppetpack.com!

American Profile CoverCrabgrass Featured in American Profile Magazine!

Crabgrass is proud to be one of two puppet companies featured in the cover article of the October 15th edition of American Profile, a national magazine that appears in newspapers across the country. The article, The Art of Puppetry by Nancy Henderson, is an overview of puppetry from ancient times to today, and features a photo and interview with Crabgrass Puppet Theatre founders Bonny Hall and Jamie Keithline, interviews with members of one of our favorite puppet troupes, the Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers, and pictures from the puppet exhibit at last summer's Puppeteers of America National Festival in Atlanta.

Jamie Keithline and Bonny Hall formed Crabgrass Puppet Theatre in San Francisco in 1982 and have delighted audiences across the nation with their whimsical humor and puppetry. Now residents of Halifax, Vermont, they continue to tour throughout the U.S., performing in schools, museums and theaters. Their performing venues have included the Detroit Institute of Art, the Smithsonian, Paper Mill Playhouse, Tribeca Performing Arts Center, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and dozens of regional and national puppetry festivals. In 2001 Jamie and Bonny were honored by their peers when their production Anansi, Spiderman of Africa! was awarded an UNIMA-USA Citation of Excellence, the highest honor in American puppetry. This honor was repeated in 2005 with the receipt of a second UNI award for The Bremen Town Musicians. In 2008, Bonny received a Commendation for Design in the Puppet Theatre by the Arlyn Award Foundation for The Day It Snowed Tortillas.
